Recently, the Mid-America Real Estate – Wisconsin team participated in the annual “Storm the Bastille” 5k race through the streets of downtown Milwaukee. The race, celebrating the revolutionary storming of the Bastille prison by Parisians on July 14, 1790, has been a commemorative staple of downtown festivities since 1981. While the run/walk is an exciting way to celebrate France’s national holiday, it also serves as a vehicle for team bonding and culture development for the entire Mid-America – Wisconsin family. This year being my first with the firm, it was an unforgettable experience as my colleagues and I, with exception of one (see photo), stepped out of our suits and into our race gear as we battled for the #1 spot.
A handful of us quickly rushed through the crowd as we attempted to lead the pack, some more successful than others. Slowly but surely, the star-studded team, wearing outfits words can’t adequately describe, began to evaporate amongst the thousands of other runners, nonetheless putting forth our best effort as we neared the finish line. Achieving record timing for myself at twenty-nine minutes flat, it was still a bit painful as I glimpsed many of the office veterans only a few steps ahead.
I am not much of a runner, but being the new guy in the office, otherwise known as “FNG” (I’m sure you can figure that out), I did not want to sit on the bench for this one. Nine months into my career with Mid-America, I have found that having any hesitation in this highly competitive industry will result in a loss. My days currently consist of picking up the phone, canvassing neighborhoods, and making pitches. Much like convincing myself to participate in the race, putting aside my hesitation and making that next call is of the utmost importance. Let’s face it, having the phone hung up on you is awkward, but being the new guy is all about stepping up to the plate and making things happen.
If there is any advice I can offer to myself and any others: Pick up that phone, and “Storm the Bastille.”
