Fifteen years, six months and thirteen days have passed since I joined Mid-America’s construction management department. A lot has changed in that time, and I’ve learned a lot from my clients, coworkers, consultants and contractors. I’ve been fortunate to work with some wonderful people, and I’ve also seen others behave in ways that have left me wondering how they manage to hold down a job. I’ve learned a lot from both.
One thing I’ve learned from both types of people is that none of us know everything. Some of the most humble people I’ve had the chance to work with have been the ones who seem to be the most proficient at their jobs and are the ones who have taught me the most.
I came to Mid-America with a fairly deep and diverse background in construction, having worked as both a construction manager and a general contractor for many years. But, a couple of years after starting at Mid-America, I crossed paths with a person who surpassed my experience by far. I had the privilege of working closely with him and during that period, each time he needed something from me, he spent an extra moment explaining briefly what was needed and why. He didn’t realize it but he was helping me become better at my own job. A few years later I ran into this person at a retirement party for another colleague. I mentioned that I had learned more from him than I had from anyone else. He was surprised to hear that because he didn’t realize that by spending those extra moments with me, explaining what was needed, he was actually providing a significant amount of advice.
None of us know exactly how we are perceived by those around us but I like to think that I do what I can to give the impression that I might still have something to learn from each and every person I work with.
